Taina Cooper is one of our new Associate Trustees with a deep-rooted commitment to her community of Waitahanui and Taupō. Taina has whakapapa to Ngāti Tutemohuta, Ngāti Kurakaiata, Ngāti Te Rangiita, Ngāti Hinerau, Ngāti Hine, Ngāti Kurauia, Ngāti Hikairo, Ngāti Turamakina, and Ngāti Pikiahuwaewae.

In her new role as Associate Trustee, Taina will passionately advocate for the voices of rangatahi, believing in the importance of empowering younger generations to contribute to the Trust’s mission: “Ki te hoe tonu i te waka moemoeā o rātou kua ngaro, kia whai hua hoki nga wawata o ngā uri whenua.” She emphasizes that succession in governance roles is vital, as it allows rangatahi to bring fresh perspectives and insights that reflect the needs and aspirations of their communities.

Taina holds a Diploma in Music and Technology and a Diploma in Creative Enterprise (Music Management) from Auckland University of Technology. She is particularly passionate about building capacity for her people to reclaim traditional and reciprocal relationships with the environment and te ao Māori.

Her diverse educational background complements her current role as a Senior Kainga Coach for the Tūwharetoa Settlement Trust, where she supports sustainable development initiatives within Papakāinga. With her unique blend of creativity and commitment, Taina is dedicated to fostering a future where all voices are heard and valued.
